While you wait
No heat, below freezing: what to do while you wait
During freezing weather an unheated house cools quickly. Pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces and unheated areas are exposed to far lower temperatures than the living space, so those are at risk first.
Let a tap trickle on any pipe running through an exterior wall or an unheated crawl space, and open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls.
Close off rooms you are not using. Fewer rooms, slower heat loss.
Use space heaters carefully: one per circuit, nothing within three feet of fabric, never unattended.
Do not use a gas oven, a grill or an outdoor propane heater indoors. These produce carbon monoxide in an enclosed space and are a recognised cause of winter poisonings.

Check these three things before you call
Two minutes, and they check the most common causes outside the furnace itself.
- Furnace switch. The light switch on the wall or joist beside the unit. It gets flipped by accident and nobody remembers doing it.
- Breaker. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and tell us. Repeated tripping is an electrical fault.
- Thermostat. HEAT, set above room temperature, fresh batteries. A dead battery and a dead furnace look identical from the hallway.
If all three are fine, the cause is beyond the simple checks and needs a technician.

Is it safe to leave the furnace off overnight?
If temperatures are below freezing, leaving the heat off can put plumbing at risk, and a burst pipe costs far more than the repair. Protect exposed pipes while you wait (see the steps above) and tell us the outdoor temperature when you call so we can talk through the situation.
What if the carbon monoxide alarm goes off?
Everyone outside, then call 911 from outside. Do not go back in to investigate. Once the property is cleared, we can look at the furnace.
Can you repair it tonight or just make it safe?
If the failed part is one we carry (igniter, flame sensor, capacitor, limit switch), the repair is normally done on the visit. A blower motor or control board may need a part the following day. The technician tells you which it is before starting.
